Charles City County
Virginia USGenWeb

"Charles City County is one of the oldest governmental units in America. Named after the son of King James who later became King Charles I of England, it was one of four 'boroughs' or 'incorporations' created by the Virginia Company in 1619.  The first Charles City County courthouses were located along the James River at Westover and City Point."

... and therefore there are gaps in the extant records. Efforts have been made by others to locate and publish all existing resources, and those are listed on the "books" page. Sometimes families are reflected in the records of neighboring counties, for a variety of reasons, and so it may be wise to broaden the scope of one's search for records on a particular family to the surrounding area.

This project is part of VAGenWeb and USGenWeb, a group of volunteers working together to provide free genealogy websites for genealogical research in every county and every state of the United States. This Project is non-commercial and fully committed to free genealogy access for everyone.

It is hoped that this site will develop into a suitable reflection of the heritage of Charles City County, and its importance as one of the original shires of Virginia. There is not much to search yet, but I plan to add more as time goes by, so please come back in the future for another visit.

I do not live in Charles City County, but I have visited the area a number of times, and some of my ancestors lived in the area during the early years of Jamestown settlements.

I am not available to do research or look-ups, but you may contact me if you have material that you wish to contribute. It is hoped this site will grow over time, so that it will reflect the area's heritage and its importance to the birth and growth of the Virginia colony.
