George Gibson, b. 1732 in County Cork, Ireland, was the son of Robert and Isabelle Gibson. He came to America with his parents before 1743 and lived in Augusta Co., VA. He was a Lieutenant in the French and Indian War.
     In a manuscript volume in the Virginia State Library referred to as "War Four" which contains a list of the names of soldiers of the Virginia State Line on Continental establishment who received certificates for the balance of their full pay in accordance with the Act of General Assembly of Virginia passed at November, 1781 session on page 40 there appears the name of George Gibson. The entry shows that George Gibson was a Major of Infantry and that on April 16, 1785 there was paid to him a certificate for 69.00 balance due him on account of his services in the Revolutionary War.
     About 1776, he married Elizabeth Smith, b. 1758, d. March 2, 1826, d/o Zachariah Smith of Augusta Co., VA.
     In the will of George Gibson filed in Lee Co., VA on 1 October 1818, he mentions: His wife, Elizabeth, daughters, Elizabeth Gibson, Isabella Campbell and Rachael Click and Margaret (Peggy) Gibson. Sons: Robert, Zachariah S., George, Matthew, James, William and John Gibson. Sons: Matthew and James Gibson, Executors. Will witnessed by: Josh Ewing, John L. Hardin and William Saylor.
     The will of Zachariah Smith was recorded in Will Book 7, page 63, Augusta Co., VA, April 16, 1788. In the will he mentions, son, Matthew, granddaughter Sarah and daughter Elizabeth Gibson. Mentions his sons-in-law but gives no names. Executors: Son, Matthew Gibson and Zachariah Johnston. Proved by: Margaret Galbreath and Ann Johnston.

     [3] Zachariah Smith Gibson, b. 1782, d. November 12, 1842, m. October 27, 1808 Augusta Co., VA to Ann Johnston, b. April 16, 1792, d. 1839, d/o Lt. James Johnston of Augusta Co., VA.
     [4] Rachael Gibson, b. 1793, d. 1866, m. a Cleck, d. in Buchanan Co., MO.
     [5] James Gibson, d. July 27, 1866, m. Hannah Proctor, d. October 23, 1870 in Buchanan Co., MO.
     [6] George Isaac Gibson, no dates, m. Jemima Desing Lane, Buchanan Co., MO.
     [7] William D. Gibson, m. Margaret Johnston of Manchester Co., KY. Moved to Texas.
     [8] Matthew Moss Gibson, was captured by the Indians when quite small and an old Squaw adopted him for her son that had died or was killed. His parents tried to find him. He was gone many years, in fact, was full grown when he was found, then was only identified by a birth mark. His father, Major George Gibson gave a horse and money as ransom to get him back. He never did get used to the white way of living. They would find him outside the door listening - not coming in. He would go back to the Indians and stay with them for awhile and then return home.
