The Revolutionary War pension claim of Micager Frazier, who married Susan Hamilton, of Amherst Co., VA, probably shows that she was a sister of the Revolutionary War soldier, James Hamilton. The statements made by Susan
Hamilton Frazier in her widow's claim for a pension parallel those made by James Hamilton, the soldier.
     The said Micager Frazier was born in Albemarle Co., VA, December 26, 1763. When a youth he moved to Amherst Co., VA, and while living in that county he enlisted about 1780. He states that one year after his service he moved to Wilkes Co., NC, where he remained two years, during which time he went to Amherst Co., VA, and married. Then he moved to Pittsylvania Co., VA, where he remained about 3 years, and then moved to the western part of Virginia on Sandy River, and about twelve months later moved to Jackson Co., MO.
     NOTE: He was in Russell Co., VA in 1797, according to a deposition of John Wellman, who states: "In the year 1797, or thereabouts, Micager Frazier and his wife, Susan Frazier removed into the county of Russell and settled near this deponents father."
     Micager Frazier later moved from Missouri back to Kentucky, and died in Lawrence Co., KY, November 8, 1843.
     Now James Hamilton says in his Rev. War Pension application that he was born in Orange Co., VA, in 1757, and moved to Amherst Co., VA, when 15 years of age, (1772). Susan Hamilton Frazier said she moved from Orange Co., VA to Amherst Co., VA, when about 12 years of age. In her application for a widow's pension she gives two conflicting ages. In 1846 she stated she was 89 years of age, which would place her birth in 1757, the same year James was born. In 1848 she gave her age as 95, which would place her birth in 1753, the same as Micager Frazier's birth year. 1753 is probably close to her birth year.

     Obtaining a pension from the War Department involves a tremendous amount of red tape. It was true for veterans of WWI, the Civil War and far more so for the veterans of the Revolution from which the United States emerged as a Nation.
     It was even more difficult for Micajah and Susan Hamilton Frazeur -the first Frazeur in the county who moved into the Fort Gay area about 1800, to establish a pension claim for his services in the Rev. War.
     First the war department had no record of his service. Second his discharge papers had been destroyed by fire. Third he didn't file his claim until a half century had passed. Fourth his comrades in arms had either died or scattered over the growing nation. Fifth he was illiterate.
     However, after presenting his claim two or three times, securing depositions from those few veterans who were with him during the war he finally received a pension for 18 months service during which time he was at the surrender
of Lord Cornwallis. The pension amounted to $60 a year.
     Both Mr. and Mrs. Frazeur were in their late 80s when the pension was finally approved. In 1843, Mr. Frazeur died, and his widow then 89, ran into more difficulty when she could produce no written record of their marriage.
     As the marriage had been celebrated in Virginia before court records were kept (error), and she had lost her marriage certificate years before, Mrs. Frazeur had to secure depositions from county residents establishing her marriage before she could receive a pension as a Revolutionary War veterans' widow.

Archives at Washington, DC and include:
     State of Missouri, County of Jackson,
     On this the second day of May in the year of our Lord, 1836, personally appeared before the County Court of Jackson County, Micager Frazeur, a resident of Rock Creek in the County of Jackson and State of Missouri, aged
82 years who being first duly sworn on his oath made the following statement in order to obtain the benefits of the provisions made by the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832.
     I, Micager Frazeur of Rock Creek, Jackson County, State of Missouri, was born the 25th day of December, 1753, in the county of Albemarle, VA, and when a youth moved to Amherst Co., VA, where I grew up and was drafted into the service of the United States and marched to Albemarle Barracks under Captain Richard Ballinger, which place was commanded by Colonel Taylor, where I remained one month and was discharged and returned to Amherst Co. Not long after I returned home, I enlisted under Benjamin Taliferro for 18 months and marched under command of Captain Samuel Cabell from Amherst Co. down James River by Richmond to Williamsburg where he joined General Marques De Lafayette who was engaged in battle by the British and the morning when the British left in their vessels down the river.
     Shortly after we got to Williamsburg several companies of us went under command of Major Willis Cabell down to Amelia County to Hood's Fort, which was commanded at that time by Colonel Dabney. I also saw Major Hardiman there and at different times I saw Colonel Merriweather and General Lafayette. We were marching to the Flowery Hundred then back to Hood's Fort, then to the Flowery Hundred, etc. Before the expiration of my time, I was taken sick with yellow fever, and was very ill, and a relative of mine procured a furlough from General Lafayette for me and took me home, where I remained until I recovered and not long afterward I was drafted for 60 days and marched from Amherst County under Captain Dawson to Williamsburg and to Hood's Fort and to the Flowery Hundred and was under Colonel Dabney; and at the end of 60 days I was discharged and returned home. And after that I was drafted again for 3 months and I served in the same part of the country I had been before, and at the end of the 3 months I was discharged and returned home, where I remained about one year. Then I removed to Wilkes County, North Carolina, where I remained about two years, in which time I went to Amherst County, Virginia, where I married.
     Then moved to Pittsylvania County, Virginia where I remained about three years, then I moved to the western part of Virginia in a county on the Sandy River, where I remained about twelve months, when I came to the County
of Jackson and State of Missouri.
     All the discharge I ever had burned in the conflagaration of a dwelling house; and I do not know of any person near me who can testify to those facts. I hereby relinquish every claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the present, and I declare that my name is not on any pension roll of any agency or state.
     We, Samuel Short and James Garrett, residing near Rock Creek, in the County of Jackson and State of Missouri, hereby certify that we are acquainted with Micager Frazeur who was subscribed and sworn to the above declaration and that we believe him to be 82 years of age, and that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood where he lives to have been a soldier of the Revolutionary War and we concur in that opinion.
     From the War Department Office, June 17, 1836: 
     "The declaration of Micager Frasher of Missouri has been examined and filed with suspended cases in this office.
     "The rolls of service in this office do not bear his name thereon. The testimony of witnesses as required in the enclosed printed sheet should therefore be exhibited. It is also required that the applicant should state under oath his
reasons for not applying long since for the benefits of the Act of March 18, 1818, and why he has now only applied for a pension under the Act of June 7, 1832."
     In 1842, Mr. Frazeur tried again for his pension and appeared before the County Court of Lawrence County, Kentucky, at Louisa, on the 26th day of December to present his declaration. Zattu Cushing, John Crabtree and William McClure were Gentlemen Justices of the court at that time. His declaration read in part:
     After the battle commenced at Williamsburg another express came from General Lafayette, Chief Commander at that place to march into battle. When the regiment that I was in arrived, the battle was over, and this regiment was
put into the regiment which had been broken which was commanded to march to the mouth of Little York against Cornwallis, under the last named officer at the last named place was stationed and served in making breastworks against Cornwallis until 'Wallis surrendered to General Washington, which was as well as this petitioner can recollect in 1781. After 'Wallis surrendered we were put in a detached company commanded by the following officers, to-wit: Captain Green, Lieutenant Edes and Major Hardiman to guard a body of 'Wallis men to Winchester. After marching the prisoners for sometime they were delivered to some other company at which time and place he had served for 18 months, got his discharge from the commanding officer, handed to him by Captain Tolliver through a window. He is not certain whose signature was to it as he is illiterate and as it was destroyed by the accidental burning of his house in Amherst County many years ago. John Hardy, Alexander Miller, Benjamin Fry, Ben Carroll and others making about twenty got their discharges at the same time and returned with me to Amherst County, Virginia.
     Deposition of John Wellman: In the year 1797, or thereabouts, Micager Frazeus, and his wife, Susan Frazeur removed into the county of Russell (Virginia) and settled near to this deponents father, and from that time to the
present, this deponent has always resided within three miles of the said Micajah and Susan, with the exception of some few years when Micajah lived in Missouri. An this deponent would further say that when he became acquainted with
the said Micajah and Susan they had two, if not three children married and that three, if not more of the children were older than this deponent. Further this deponent believes the said Micajah and Susan must have lived together as man
and wife for more than 70 years ago; that said Micajah and Susan lived together from the time this deponent first knew them to the day of Micajah's death as man and wife, were ever regarded as such and this deponent would further say
that a grandson of Micajah and Susan and the second child of Nancy, the oldest daughter, died as a soldier at Norfolk during the War of 1812.

     Said Micajah Frazier was born December 23, 1753 in Albemarle County, Virginia. When a youth he moved to Amherst County, Virginia, and while living in that county, he enlisted about 1780, and served at various times until
shortly after the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, amounting to at least 18 months in all, as a Private with Virginia troops under Captain Richard Ballanger, Samuel Cabell, Dawson and Green, and Colonel Taylor, Pope and Dabney.
     He stated that about one year after his service he moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina, where he remained for two years, during which time he went to Amherst County, Virginia, and was married, that he then moved to Pittsylvania County, Virginia, where he remained about three years and then moved to the western part of Virginia on Sandy River, and about twelve months later moved to Jackson County, Missouri.
     He applied for a pension May 2, 1836, at which time he was a resident of Rock Creek, Jackson County,
Missouri.
     In 1842 he was living in Lawrence County, Kentucky, and was 88 years of age. He died November 8, 1843 in that county.
     He married Susan Hamilton who was born in Orange County, Virginia, and who moved to Amherst County, Virginia, when about twelve years of age. She stated that they were married near Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia, as it was then the custom of persons living in Amherst County, Virginia to go to Augusta to be married. She states that she was married previous to the soldiers first tour of duty, but did not give a definite date, and that at the time of the surrender of Cornwallis they had two or three children.
     In 1846, one John Thompson, a resident of Wayne County, Virginia (now West Virginia) and aged 71 years, stated that there was not more than one years difference between his age and that of Nancy, who as the eldest child of Micajah and Susan Frazier, and that the second child of the said Nancy (name not given) died at Norfolk as a soldier in the War of 1812. Reference was made to three or more children of Micajah and Susan, but only the name given was that of Nancy.
     October 13, 1846, date of allowance of application of claim of Susan, the widow, stated she was 89 years of age and was living in Wayne Co., Virginia in 1848 she stated she was 95 and a resident of that county.
